Brakes

Due to the increase in HP and for visual appearance I am converting the rear drums to discs (although this is debateable as many say that discs don't have much, if an advantage over drums when it comes to regular everyday driving. Racing on the other hand... ).

We are deciding between the 'Stage 2' (cross drilled and slotted) conversion kit offered from motorsport (pictured) or custom making a kit using a 5 bolt stud pattern. This is because there aren't alot of options when purchasing the required 280zx rotors and Maxima calipers in Australia. Converting to a 5 stud means we have more options when it comes to replacement (if we can use a popular/common model) and means there are more options when choosing the mags

We are investigating this at the moment and I will post more info soon.

Motorsport Stage 2 Rear Disc Conversion Kit

Some issues on rear disc converions:

Brake bosster may need to be replaced as the stock system is made for front discs and rear drums and therefore mightn't be capable of supplying the juice to all 4 wheels.

A proportioning valve may also be needed as I have read that the stock system supplies about a 70% - 30% ratio where an 'ideal' is 60-40. Note: this info is just taken from an online forum and has no practical evidence on my behalf. More info will be posted once we have conducted more research

If we custom make a kit we have to allow room for the components. This includes the overall width of the rotor and caliper (making sure it clears the mag) aswell well as the thickness etc (making sure the caliper will mount and work adequetly with the rotor). This is also dependant upon the custom mounting bracket. At the moment we are looking at using 300zx calipers and rotors.
